Whether you want your kids to help out around the property or to join you off-roading, they’re going to need a side-by-side, or UTV, built specifically for youth. We here at Ball Equipment want to make sure you get them something safe to ride, so we’ve put together a brief buying guide to youth UTVs, below. To learn more, or to see the side-by-sides we have for sale, contact our stores in Richmond and Sandusky, Michigan, today!

The Measurements

First, know that UTVs made for youth are going to be understandably smaller and less powerful, which helps them stay safe and in control. Your average youth side-by-side engine displacement will be between 150 cc and 250 cc, and it will never get higher than 500 cc. They tend to have only two-wheel drive and a 10” ground clearance, and on average measure about 48” wide and 85” long. Of course, there’s plenty of variety in every stat in order to meet the needs of any youth.

Safety Features

Different brands and models of youth side-by-sides will have different built-in safety features, but most come with their own helmet with a built-in chip to let you know they’re wearing it. Make sure it’s crash-test certified before they ride off, though, and that it fits them comfortably and securely. Any youth UTV that includes a five-point seat belt is also a winner, and they should also have a safety or cargo net. If you want, some models even come with throttle limiters to help you control your kids’ maximum speed.
